Following God’s Calling

Anabela is 50 years old and is the nurse and midwife at LIFE’s mission partner village clinic in Angola – a place where mothers arrive with sick children, where babies take their first breaths and where hope often hangs by a thread. For Anabela, this isn’t just a job. It’s the calling God placed deep within her heart.

Years ago, when her child was hospitalized, she found herself caring for other sick children as well. One desperate mother, mistaking her white clothing for a nurse’s uniform, handed her her critically ill baby. Anabela bought medicine for the child with her own small income.

Though scolded by a doctor, she replied, “I know God will do wonders. My baby will be okay.” That moment lit a fire in her soul. She trained as a nurse and began serving in Kutembo, first in a simple hut with no equipment and now in a clinic that still sees overwhelming need.

Every day, she faces the heartbreaking reality that most of the sickness in her community comes from two simple, devastating shortages: clean water and food.

Families gather at a muddy hole where pigs swim, urinate and stir up filth. The water is thick and cloudy. Yet mothers have no alternative source for their daily water supply. When children drink it, the consequences are immediate and terrifying: vomiting, fever, parasites, worms . . . even bloody diarrhea.

She remembers one child who was close to death and whose mother had no food. Anabela, recalling the story of the widow’s mite in Scripture, spent her own money to buy them milk and mineral water. Two months later, she didn’t even recognize the child. The mother’s joy and the child’s transformation spread hope through the village!

“If I had enough,” she says, “I would buy water for everyone.” She shares whatever she has. She prays for those who come for help. And she begs: “Please do everything you can while you are still alive. Don’t stop. Keep following the children.”

Just as Anabela gives from what she is able to share, friends of LIFE’s compassion reaches further – changing futures, saving children and strengthening those who serve on the front lines.
