A Legacy of Love and Care

In 1989 my parents, James and Betty Robison, went to Africa to meet missionary Peter Pretorius. Mozambique was suffering famine and drought, and great numbers of children were dying daily from malnutrition. In fact, Peter had been helping to dig graves for children in a cemetery that stretched as far as the eye could see.

That was a life-changing trip for my parents and for LIFE Outreach, which, at that time, was adding mission outreaches to the core ministry of evangelism and television ministry.

James and Betty met with Peter and Ann many more times in Africa as the Mission Feeding outreach grew in number of daily feedings and as the LIFE Center in Rwanda, one of the first LIFE Centers, was built for children orphaned as a result of genocide between tribes in that nation.

There is a key verse here at LIFE Outreach that defines our mission. Colossians 3:17 says, And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

I witnessed my father preaching to many thousands of people in evangelistic meetings through my younger years. He went on to become one of the first to use television to present God’s plan of salvation. The preaching of the Word is the heart of LIFE Outreach and will continue to be.

But the connection with Peter and Ann, and eventually their son Isak, not only united our families in friendship, but birthed a legacy of love through mission outreaches that have continued for more than 35 years!

Mission Feeding, Water for LIFE and LIFE Centers were some of the first outreaches developed with the help of Peter and Ann, and the impact on many nations across Africa is still felt today. The Word has been planted in thousands of villages, and the love shown through feeding the hungry, drilling water wells and caring for children has demonstrated God’s heart for the poor.

Today, I have the privilege of working with Isak Pretorius, who has developed mission works all over Africa. His compassion for the poor and desire to make a difference in lives are inspiring. We are sons of fathers who have made a tremendous impact for the Kingdom of God. And we are sons of the Father who has called us to carry on the legacy of love, compassion and drive to bless and better the lives of the world’s poor. I’m reminded of Jesus’ instructions to us in Matthew 5:16, “. . . let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” With the generous giving of LIFE Outreach’s friends, love in word and deed is being fulfilled every day in many ways.
