The Battle Between Two Kingdoms

By Jennie Allen April 26, 2026 Words of Life

You and I live in a world where two realms overlap—the visible and the invisible. You eat breakfast, fold laundry, send texts, and all the while, a spiritual war rages around you. And it’s personal.

Whether you’ve believed in Jesus since kindergarten or the spiritual world feels a little out there, can we agree that something ominous is happening beneath the surface of our everyday life? Beneath the surface-level chaos, something deeper is unraveling—something strategic, targeted, and ancient.

You don’t need another book to tell you that something has gone terribly wrong; that despair and fear slip into your thoughts when you’re most vulnerable; that the ache for clarity and peace isn’t weakness, but evidence you were made for more. You can feel it.

So what if I told you that the lies you battle aren’t random? What if there’s a reason you feel this war inside you and around you?

There is.

The world we’re living in isn’t neutral ground. The apostle Paul reminds us that “the night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So, let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light” (Romans 13:12). This is not metaphor. It’s reality. And you and I aren’t bystanders in it. There are “works of darkness” and “armor of light.” Two opposing forces. But though they are opposites, they aren’t equal.

Darkness doesn’t go around picking off the weak. It goes to battle with you because you carry the light.

I love this reminder from the prophet Isaiah: “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you” (Isaiah 60:1). This light is not your light; it is God’s light. You and I radiate this light when we live in His presence. His glory is our beauty. And it’s not something you earn. It’s something you carry.

Think about how you walk in the dark: squinting, fearful, anxious, tentative. But in the light, you walk with confidence, eyes wide open, and mindful of everything around you. This little journey we’re on? It’s about waking up and becoming clearer about what you’re believing and how you’re choosing to live.

The forces that oppose you are real. But there is One who is for you. And He is greater than the Darkness. In Him you are not helpless. You are seen, sealed, and surrounded.

It’s hard to see the truth when we’re bombarded and blinded by lies. And yet those lies are based on a shadow framework, a mimic of what’s real. The real framework isn’t made of shadows. It’s made of brilliance. Of light.

When you live in God’s truth, you get free from the Darkness. And you start setting others free too. But how can you tell which kingdom you’re living under?

Think of it this way: The Kingdom of Darkness maintains its power through lying to you about who you really are, then exhausting you with trying to become who you think you should be. The gap isn’t just a feeling; it’s territory the enemy has claimed in your life. And the Kingdom of Light comes to heal that division, to close that gap with grace rather than striving.

These two kingdoms aren’t just conceptual—they’re deeply biblical. Jesus spoke of them repeatedly: “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). Paul elaborated, saying God “has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves” (Colossians 1:13).

The kingdom of God is ultimate. And it stands forever.

The so-called Kingdom of Darkness? It’s real but temporary. It’s an echo of rebellion built on lies, led by Satan, who wants nothing more than to pull us away from the life God gives.

Every thought, every belief, every decision we make aligns us with one or the other.

Right now, in the spiritual realms, woven invisibly into your ordinary day, a real war rages. Good against evil. Light against Darkness. Freedom against chains. And the enemy’s best trick? To convince you that he isn’t real at all.

The lies keep coming, because the Dark Kingdom is built on a foundation that always shifts. And God hates that. He hates the bondage, the striving, the gnawing hunger. The way Darkness strips away who He made us to be.

When you see what God is doing and how the enemy is trying to counterfeit it, you realize the stakes are real. You start to understand: This journey asks for our conscious participation as we choose which path we’ll follow.

Speak life over your home. Resist sin with the authority of the Holy Spirit inside you. Take territory back. Not because you’re strong, but because God is—and He has given you everything you need to fight.
