A New Well Means Hope for the Future

By the time the sun rises over her village, Catarina is already awake.
For years, her days began the same way — a two- to three- hour trek to retrieve water for her and her family. Only this water wasn’t clean. It was dirty and contaminated, filled with deadly bacteria. Yet it was all they had.
Catarina would return home exhausted, praying the water wouldn’t bring fever or diarrhea again. Praying none of her children would grow weak and sick. Sometimes, those prayers felt unanswered.
Two small graves lie on the other side of the village — Paulo, just 4, and João Batista, only 2. Contaminated water stole them both. When Catarina speaks their names, her voice breaks. Some days, she says, the grief is so heavy she doesn’t even feel like eating. But today, something is different.
Today, she stands beside a working water pump. Clear water splashes into a bucket as children laugh nearby. Her daughter Dominga balances baby Zayze on her hip while Americo, 11, eagerly takes a turn pumping.
She thanks God. She thanks the Water for LIFE team and the friends of LIFE who made the well possible.
For the first time in years, the water is clean. No long walk. No muddy river. No fear of what might be hiding inside each cup. “If we had this before,” she says softly, “my children would still be alive.” Yet her gratitude is stronger than her grief.
Because this well doesn’t just give water. It gives strength. It gives her children a chance to grow up healthy. And now that her children have access to clean water, her heart stretches beyond her own family.
Mothers from other villages are walking hours for water just like she once did. They are still losing children. Catarina pleads, not for herself, but for them: “Please save us and help us.”
Sometimes hope sounds like laughter around a well. Sometimes the love of God looks like clear water in a bucket. But every time, a heartfelt gift from a friend like you helps save a life.
