The Clinic That Turns Hope into Healing

In the sweltering heat of the dry season, mothers clutch their babies as they walk to the malnutrition clinic. At home their infants’ cries had grown faint, too weak to protest the hunger that grips their tiny bodies. On the lips of many mothers is the prayer, “Hold on. You’re going to make it,” murmured again and again.

The clinic is filled with the cries and whimpers of babies. It’s a heartbreaking sound, but nurses understand the sounds of suffering and diligently meet with mothers and exam their children. These clinic nurses see the signs of malnutrition every day – sunken cheeks, swollen bellies, vacant eyes. They speak not only to the babies, but to the mothers, “We will do our best. Stay strong.”

There are new arrivals daily, many from nearby Pibor, but others walk for days in hopes of receiving lifesaving help.

The malnourished children are screened using three criteria: weight, height and arm measurement. The most severely malnourished get the most attention first. Many babies are so weak they must be fed via a small tube, much like you would use to feed a baby bird. But even these dire cases can see full recovery!

Mission Feeding supplies malnutrition clinics with a special nutritional formula that can help malnourished babies become the joyful, energetic babies their mothers have so desperately hoped for. In a basic tent, in a remote area of South Sudan, lives are saved, not by chance, but by compassion with special nutrition and a dedicated clinic staff who care.
